A large number of research methods in the social sciences claim to be based on a field approach. The notion of intervention is at the heart of a certain number of methods developed in the different research communities. These research methods have the common ambition to produce practical knowledge that serves action, and also more general theoretical knowledge. In this article we argue that intervention research, taken in its widest sense, is a general framework capable of housing a great many different management sciences research practices. We show that interaction between field and theory constitutes a grounded management engineering, which embodies the general project that can be attributed to the management sciences.
